Like, Could This Be The Answer You’re Looking For?

You probably never thought you’d discover The Answer To Life whilst staring at a computer screen on some weird site called The Unlost.

But then again, you never thought you’d like that new Justin Bieber song, either, and it turns out you do– so just trust me on this one, K? Let’s get this story rolling.

. . .

It all started when I was walking my sister’s roommate’s dad’s girlfriend’s dog the other night (long story) and having a total freakout fest about this whole weirdo journey I’ve embarked on.

I HAVE NO CLUE WHO I AM ANYMORE!! WHO AM I AND WHERE AM I AND WHAT AM I DOING HERE AGAIN???!” I shouted while looking Lola The Dog straight in the eye.

Lola didn’t answer. (That bitch never answers!)

And so of course I kept walking. And walking. And walking…

Until all of the sudden a thought washed over me and I stopped dead in my tracks.

OMG, I DO KNOW WHO I AM!!

In fact, I left home precisely because I have a deep knowing of myself! And although I may feel lost as heck now, I had the clarity and purpose and direction to leave behind that which no longer mattered to me– to leave behind my life that was good, but not great.

Today more than ever, I know who I am!

HOLY BEJEEZUS!!!!

I felt as if I’d suddenly woken up to life for the first time.

I KNOW WHO I AM!!!” I yelled at the top of my lungs with pure joy. I LOLled and OMGed and skipped down the sidewalk like a crazy person!

The dude walking his dog across the street stopped and stared, but whatev. I’m sure weirder things have happened– this is California, after all.

. . .

A man crawls for years on his stomach with his eyes closed. Then one moment he opens his eyes, and he’s in a garden. It’s Spring.

- Rumi

. . .

It’s time for us to open our eyes, guys.

It’s time for us to WAKE UP to the life that’s all around us– to WAKE UP to the garden that is life, to the bagel that is

already

right

in front

of

our

noses.

too many people look at the holes in their lives and miss the bagel!

DELISH.

Whether I am aware of it or not, I already know who I am.

Whether our eyes are open or not, we are already crawling in the spring garden of life.

Whether we see it or not, the bagel is already chilling right here.

And not only is the bagel already here, but get this, guys:

The hole doesn’t have to go away in order for the bagel to arrive.

Pause for a second and think about this one.

Seriously– just stop.

(Hammer time.)

If you think that the hole has to go away before the bagel can arrive, then you’re freaking delusional!

In fact, this is complete and absolute nonsense, right?! The hole and the bagel coexist perfectly and without conflict.

Holy bejeezus! We’ve all been totally delusional our whole lives!

The pain doesn’t have to go away in order for comfort to arrive.

The confusion doesn’t have to go away in order for clarity to arrive.

The hole doesn’t have to go away in order for the bagel to arrive.

In fact, the bagel can never arrive, for it is already here. It already exists.

Hole:Bagel::Confusion:Clarity

The hole doesn't have to go away in order for the bagel to arrive!

The strength, the love, the happiness that we seek has always existed, right here and right now– and not only does it already exist, but it exists right smack-dab in the midst of its so-called opposite.

Open your eyes.

Wake up!

It is all right here, right now– that which you loathe as well as that which you seek.

. . .

“I do know who I am! I do have clarity and purpose and direction!” I realized while walking the bitch on that fateful night, and this notion still stands truer than ever.

Funny thing is, at the same time I am totally lost– so much so that I often find myself consulting a dog for The Answers.

Life, as it turns out, is amaze-balls like that: we are totally starving AND there are bagels all around us. We are totally poor AND there is money freely flowing all around us, being exchanged by millions of people as we speak. (There are also quarters under our couch cushions.) We are lost AND we are found, and the two can (and do) coexist without conflict or tension.

This life is far stranger– far more joyful and painful, far more difficult and yet easier than we can ever imagine.

This life is bagel-and-hole all in one.

Thank you. I really enjoyed your post. It’s such a great reminder that life will never be “solved.” Joy and pain exist next to each other. The trick (I think) is to acknowledge both and celebrate the bagel!

OMG, I just needed a post of this kind on this particular monday! :) Long to expain… (work-related), today I’m on the pain side, I hope in tomorrow’s joy (the bagel!).

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

Glad it’s what you needed! & Remember that even if all you can see today is the hole, the bagel is still here too… ;-)

  • Drew

    Awesome analogy! So true!

“This life is far stranger– far more joyful and painful, far more difficult and yet easier than we can ever imagine.”

      Thanks Drew!

All of life is a forgetting, then a remembering (and so on ad finitum) … luckily your site is part of our “remembering” who we are and what we already know that we insist we don’t in our dark times.

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

I think we need more reminders all around us, we need more stuff that draws us out of the darkness instead of pulling us further in…

Man, I need to take way more epiphany walks. My constant napping doesn’t produce the kind of wisdom I’d like AT ALL. Thanks for the bagel knowledge though. I think if someone could work a life analogy into my other favorite breakfast foods like bacon, or breakfast tacos, or cookie crisp cereal I’d probably never have another bad day in my life.

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

Should I consider that a challenge?

  • http://www.vishnusvirtues.com/ Vishnu

Kind of confused about I’m a hole or the bagel but I think I know what i’m having for lunch today:) Also, why do you keep calling your Dad’s gf a bitch? lol and jk:) Therese!

I think you’re saying that we’re already here – we just need to embrace ourselves. We already know our direction and purpose – we just need to realize it. That journey to that realization is an internal one, no? the more we go within, the more we can find what we’ve been looking for? ourselves?

    Time for a bagel lunch!

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

      Hahaha, you’re funny!

Is it a question of “OR”– the hole OR the bagel?

Or could it be a question of “AND?” Can we embrace the hole AND the bagel?

As far as what I’m saying… I’m not “saying” anything; the interpretation is up to you! I like yours, though, it sounds right on par! :-)

      Enjoy your bagel lunch! ;-)

    Dude…..

    I’VE GOT THE BAGEL!

Seriously, I haven’t ever heard that metaphor. Excellently put, fine mademoiselle. Love the part about California!!

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

      Dude, OMG, THE BAGEL EXISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • http://www.optimisticwellness.com/ Josh Lipovetsky

        I’VE GOT THE POWER!

  • Tria Aronow

Wonderful post, as always! I had a similar realization the other day (without the bagel analogy). I noticed that there is plenty that I am unhappy with at the moment (the hole) but that I am still happy and grateful (because know the bagel is there too!). Thank you!!!

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

:-) I think we are on similar wavelengths!

“If you think that the hole has to go away before the bagel can arrive, then you’re freaking delusional!”

This makes me smile because I spent atleast a solid 10 years trying to eliminate that whole… The problem was that I didn’t have a clue what the hole was… I just knew that whatever it was I had to eliminate it or I would never be happy.

I was reasonably happy but I was always wanting more. But I didn’t know what more was. I wish I could pinpoint the exact thing that made me transfer from “living for the outcome” to “enjoying the journey to the outcome” but I don’t think it works like that. I think it is an ongoing process.

I currently live in Japan where I am pursuing my childhood dream: to become a ninja… I used to have a job in America that I despised like it was bad Body Odor ( I REALLY HATE BAD BODY ODOR!). But over time I gradually and slowly started to make little shifts that allowed me to eventualy leave that job and take up a new life. Just as this process was slow and ongoing, so was the process to start enjoying the journey.

This was a really great post Therese… It really stimulated the heck out of my brain :)

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

      Hey Izmael,

I think your experience is right on par with the human experience… I’ve felt similarly, and as far as pinpointing the “exact thing” that helped me “transfer,” I’m not sure I can either (and I’m not always “transferred,” either; I still shift in & out of “enjoying the journey!”) It can’t really be adequately explained in words because, I think, it is much deeper than language and thought :).

I’m glad you are pursuing your dream and enjoying the process and the journey. What a cool story! DO REAL NINJAS REALLY EXIST?!!!!

      • http://www.30yearoldninja.com/ Izmael Arkin

… I certainly hope they exist! I quit my job in America and travelled across the ocean to come and be one :)

Actually, since I am pursuing my 8 year old brain’s imagination of “becoming a ninja” I get to make all the rules… It is an everchanging concept.

That is a really good point that you bring up in regards to “shifting in and out” of the transfer. I agree that it is a constant development. I may feel excited, optimistic, and like I “figured it out” today, but being human I may crumble and “question it all” come next Monday.

… I just used a whole lot of quotes.

I really enjoy your blog Therese :)

Clarity and confusion co-existing… I love that! That may well be the most brilliant piece of advice about moving forward that I’ve ever heard. Rock on, Therese. You absolutely know. (And now I’m going to go have a bagel…)

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

Hahaha! I think I may have indirectly caused an increase in bagel consumption for the week…

I absolutely know, and yet I absolutely don’t know.

      ;-)

More completely amazing insights Therese! Everything is always present. We pick and choose what we see, how we see it and how we experience it. This is how we create our lives. It took me a while to figure this one out. Once it hit me, knowing that everything is a choice, I suddenly felt so free.

You’re on an amazing journey. May it never end…..

    • http://www.theunlost.com Therese

      Hey Paige,

Yes, you are a wise lady! I think it takes us all a lifetime to figure this out… for me, I find that I remember it and then forget it and remember it and then forget it over and over and OVER again! Such is life… :)
